Whats the point in training staff on a fake route?

Why not? You can't just train them on a real route, because they'd still need to be trained in reality wouldn't they?

Presumably a fictional route permits training on a wider variety of features than would be possible on a realistic one - incorporating all sorts of features in a shorter route. I would imagine there are also issues regarding ensuring a simulated route based on the real thing is exactly correct.
